Aug. 20th, 2008 @ 06:24 pm New Galaxion!
Hey, did you catch yesterday's new page?

I finally sat down and went over my scripts, and figured out that I am a mere 25 pages away from finishing up chapter 3 and, more importantly, finishing up the contents of the first graphic novel. (Holy cow, it just hit me that that means Chapter 3 will be a hefty 55 pages long.) And of that 25, two pages are completely done, and another eight have already been penciled. So we're getting close! Ever so close. I fully expect to have a book to sell at last by the time the next con season starts up again!

What this also means is, I have to start seriously thinking about how I'm going to be printing this thing. Print-On-Demand is easiest, but it means I wouldn't be able to sell the books in comic shops, or any other source except direct from me. I'd much rather go with standard offset, even if it means I'm going to have to find a place for 1000 books in my basement. Do I take pre-orders? Do I approach Diamond again? And what the heck am I going to put on the cover??

is it ever possible for me to play a gig and not miss a single note? highly unlikely! tonight's show was just silly. i don't know. it went by too quickly, but then.,.they always do. but it was nice seeing some old friends...two of them. actually. pretty weird. my bass had an unusual tone. must be the new strings????? eeeeeeeh. yeah. i am probably one of the few who actually plays better with my eyes closed.

soon after the show was ever, the gang moved to the bar. sweaty and stinky, i figured i'd join. after finding my corner to hide in, i looked around and said to myself that it all blows. so i sneaked out of there without even saying good bye. the cab ride home was $12.,.,but worth it. the night air was refreshing, the cab driver's insane foreign language was soothing, and the seats....my god...the seats in cabs are always magically comfortable.

it was nice sneaking out.,.,being the classic introvert that i am.,.,hanging out at bars always seems so uncomfortable. hmmm. yerah. magic missile. tomorrow i go to Baltimore.

Aug. 19th, 2008 @ 10:47 am "Li'l Kids" graphic novel
Current Mood: accomplished
Current Music: The Pogues

My first graphic novel, collecting a variety of short stories I've written and drawn, is now available. Yay! It's titled Li'l Kids and is 88 pages in length and features three short stories plus all kinds of concept art. Plus, there's a lot on the writing side of things, too. Not only did I include the script from each story but I also did a breakdown detailing how each story was put together - right from the brainstorming stage to the final script. Hopefully you'll enjoy the peek behind the curtain!

Final Li'l Kids Front Cover

And I've made it available a few different ways, too. First, you can download a free PDF Ebook version at my website (http://www.vonallan.com/shop.html). The link to the PDF is there and there's also a link to a torrent version of the book, too. So if you're not sure about purchasing it sight unseen or if you just prefer an ebook version, this is the way to go. If you do download it, please share it, too. It's licenced under Creative Commons, so if you like it please pass it around to friends and family. One of the hardest things about being an artist is avoiding obscurity. This is an attempt to avoid some of that so please, I would dearly love it if you pass it around.

If you want to purchase a copy, there are a few ways of doing it. The print version is up on Amazon now as well as Barnes and Noble (I'll post the links in just a sec). It will be in a few stores here in Ottawa, Ontario in the near future (including my old bookshop Perfect Books). I'm not positive about comic shops yet. That should be finalized in the next week or two, but things are still up in the air on that front.

The Amazon links are as follows (and yes, in the interest of full disclosure, I do earn a few cents if you purchase a copy following these links):

Amazon.com                        Amazon.ca                         Amazon.co.uk

And the link to Barnes and Noble is right here, too!

I'm still a little dazzled that I have my first book out, too. I hope you like it!

Aug. 19th, 2008 @ 12:04 am Looking Up- Pre-Orders
Current Mood: pleased
Current Music: The Paper Raincoat, Brooklyn Blurs, Safe In the Sound - EP
My new graphic novel about a small mining town in West Virginia, Looking Up, will be going to the printers in two weeks! As has been requested, I am opening the gates for pre-orders. You may read the whole story online for free.

All pre-ordered copies will be signed and dedicated to the purchaser. Please email me (uhusted@gmail.com) if you wish to have your book dedicated to someone other than yourself!

I have added the option for an individual ink rendering of the main characters on the frontispiece of pre-ordered books. I won't have the time do do many of these, but it was a requested option and I am flattered and pleased that folks have asked for drawings with their books. :)

The pre-ordered books will be shipped in the first week of October.

Thank you for your time and indulgence!

Aug. 18th, 2008 @ 06:57 pm Hanging, homesteading and hiking

LOVE old motel signs, originally uploaded by B_Zedan.

There has been a lot of hanging out and driving around and tromping the past couple of days. We went to some awesome shale slide ice cave things today. Pictures soon.

Coming up is the time that I'll for sure be away from the computer (and even the little time I've squeezed in has left me with a hella GReader and LJ backlog, ouch). We'll be going to Thermopolis and the Garden of Eden in Idaho.

Fun times. I can't believe people do this vacation thing regularly.

Aug. 18th, 2008 @ 12:29 am Milk and Cheese: The Stupid Edition

Front and back cover to Milk and Cheese: The Special Edition, published in 1997, and one of my dumber ideas, business-wise, if not necessarily comics-wise (there are a lot of contenders for that). Actually, the high concept wasn't mine, a friend suggested it, but my mistake was to turn the bit into a 16-page mini-comic . My second mistake was making it an SLG exclusive available only through conventions and mail order. I don't have the time to go into my thinking on that one.

Anyway, I was looking for something on my reference shelf and a copy of the mini fell out and I decided to scan the covers while taking a break from the lightbox, which is really boiling my eyes tonight for some reason. Some of you have seen this, many of you have not. It's an 8-page extension of the 3-page Darth Vader Overdrive strip from M&C #666, along with some fake behind the scenes guff and other odds and ends.It was while the Star Wars trilogy re-releases were being shoved down the world's throat and a friend said I should re-release the Darth Vader strip, ha ha. We added terrible computer effects, more scenes, blah blah.

I intend to include the material in the second M&C collection, which will be released sometime after 2026. If I live that long.

Current Location: Mexico DF
Current Music: olympic highlights
Still in Mexico.

We finally made it to Mexico City yesterday, which is enormous and pretty nuts. I´ve barely taken any photos here because I took a million the first week and feel kinda burnt out on them. We´ve been staying with couchsurfers most of the trip, and everyone has been so generous with their homes and their time. Tonight Alex and Omar are out drinking with our host Franco and his friends, but I´m being a weenie and staying in because it was already 11pm and we´re going to try to hike some pyramids tomorrow. That is why I have in-ter-net time.

Notes:

- The dollar to peso exchange rate is damn sweet.

- I´m finally coming out of a nearly weeklong case of Tummy Ache.

- We´ve been watching the Olympics. It´s really really fun watching them in another country, especially with coverage by jubilant Spanish newscasters.

- One out of two Mexican 14 year olds is a big raging metalhead.

- The weather is great. We thought it was going to be scorching desert hot but turns out summer is monsoon season so its been warm with cool thunderstorms. Lots of cool lightening over churches with neon blue crosses and all that.

- I´m still getting used to the thing where people greet you by kissing you on the cheek. Oh, hi!

Only a few days left. If not for the promise of non-tummy ache food, I don´t think I´m particularly excited to come home. Later, internet!
